Within the last 6 months I switched a number of my sites to a single
'Virtual Dedicated Server'. I'm using GoDaddy and it costs me about
$40/month.

I still have a few sites in a shared hosting service at CWI Hosting,
where a basic Java setup is about $20/month. I like that it comes with
the CPanel control panel.

I switched to a Virtual Server because the JVM's at CWI seem to get
hung up or shut down on a regular basis and it just became a PITA to
keep them running. Also, I couldn't install software.

I'm pretty happy with the GoDaddy server. I have had to install
software on it (Ruby/Rails/MySql) and did so with no problems. You're
root, which is nice. Got Root? :-)

They do offer windows virtual servers, so you can just Remote Desktop
into your virtual server. That's pretty cool.

The Virtual Servers sure beat shared hosting because you can control
the machine as an admin and install whatever software you need. Also,
you can easily host multiple sites on the one virtual server.

There are other virtual server hosts out there, you might try one of
them instead. The GoDaddy servers come with old software: they now
offer Fedora Core 4, but the latest release is Fedora Core 6, MySql
was old, etc. GoDaddy support is non-existent for virtual servers, if
you get it you'd better know what you're doing or make sure that the
control panel can do it for you. (Get a good control panel, not the
basic)
