MAP: http://www.rtprug.org/sitemap.pdf TOPIC: BEYOND BLOGGING: FEEDS IN ACTION ABSTRACT: Like XML-RPC and SOAP before, RSS/Atom feeds and publishing protocols were born in the blogopshere and quickly moved beyond blogging. Nowadays, web service providers are using RSS/Atom feeds and REST- based publishing protocols as lightweight alternatives to SOAP. And developers are finding new ways to combine web services from different sites into new applications, known as "mash-ups" in the lingo of Web 2.0. In this talk you'll learn the history, details, pros and cons of the many RSS and Atom feed formats. You learn about techniques for parsing feeds, techniques for serving feeds and the workings of the Atom Publishing Protocol, a new lightweight REST protocol for web publishing that serves as the basis for new APIs from Google and other web API providers. SPEAKER: Dave Johnson is the original developer of the Roller blog server and the author of RSS and Atom in Action (Manning Publications, 2006). Based in Raleigh, North Carolina Dave works for Sun Microsystems to develop, promote and advance Roller and other Java-based RSS/Atom technologies.
