I am digging into Ruby and Rails.  The book referenced below seems
pretty good but I am looking for a good reference for Ruby as a
language.  I was somewhat disappointed at the documentation supplied

.. Seems to lack a good index... Really a language reference.
Ironically the lack of comprehensive reference was one of the extreme
negative points for me with Perl... Which for some reason Bruce Eckel
referenced when commenting on Ruby.  I have thought it is cool but
definitely need a comprehensive ref on the syntax/ language elements.

P.S. - I need a reference that is offline as well for when I am
traveling.

If you're in the UK, ordering direct from us might be your best bet.   
Usually both pragmaticprogrammer.com and Amazon.com get their stock in
first, then Borders and Barnes and Noble within the next 1-3 weeks
within the US.  Other countries can take at least 3-4 weeks and
sometimes more before they get stock :-(.

PDF's really help in that regard -- you don't have to pay for shipping,
either :-)
