I have been working on a project that is suitable for middle schoolers. It's called the Freely Available Networked Gaming (FANG) Engine. See http://www.fangengine.org/ The FANG Engine has been used for quite some time with middle schoolers and high schoolers. In addition, I'm working on a new project called the Java Wiki Integrated Development Environment (JavaWIDE) that allows students to create Java programs and video games using only a web browser (no software needs to be downloaded or installed). Information about this project is at http://www.javawide.org/ Students can start making their games immediately using JavaWIDE and the FANG Engine at http://sandbox.fangengine.org/ Both of these projects are rapidly developing, so any feedback you have on them would be great.
