I can talk/share about JMS some and more deeply about MQSeries and Tibco messaging technologies.

Using the appended job description, the following stack would be a good starting point.
Eclipse, J2EE, Servlets, JSP, Struts, EJB, and JMS.

Oops, forgot Spring, JDBC and JPA.

And even though it is spring, maybe we should push for some Hibernate too?
That may be pushing it too far.  Maybe Hibernate should wait for the fall.

LAMP?  LAMJ?  WAMJ?

We need something stronger for the "A".
JBoss or Geronimo?
Which fits best on a Laptop?

Or Apache OpenEJB?  Can someone make a recommendation?

PostgreSQL or MySQL?
Duck!  Incoming Flame Throwers!
There is a local MySQL User Group.
I guess there are fewer PostgreSQL jobs out there.

An open source project?  Sounds great.
Please provide recommendations for an open source project that can provide a training experience for the above stack of technologies.

 - Apache Open Web Beans
I bet there are some ToastMasters out there that are in need of opportunities to Practice.

What skills are you willing to share via brief training presentations?

Some of us older folk might even try to
remember how to be Groovy again and get onto the Grails.
This may provide a shortcut to a job.

Then, once we have jobs, we can proceed to add some of the more esoteric skills.

JSF, Seam
Lucene/Solra

NOSQL: Hadoop, Cassandra, HBase

Java ME

All Aboard!  Let's have some fun.
