Mobile Java only presumed dead

Here's an article that shows Java Micro Edition is the #2 "OS" on
phones, well ahead of Android but behind Apple iOS:

I know my super-cheap LG 420G uses Java for it's "features", but I
wonder how they're deployed. Via MIDP? Is it possible to make Midlets
without having to send Oracle a bucket of money as a license fee? Any
free phone emulators out there that a Midlet could be tested on?

This month's technical presentation will be related to using Java for
mobile development, but via translation to Javascript. Details should be
at http://trijug.org soon, along with a line or two about what's coming
in future months.
