Especially given the trend of designers to disable the underlining of links,
visual users can't distinguish these links, except by advanced use of
the hunt the link technique of waving the mouse whilst watching the
status line needed to detect the more creative ways of hiding links.

Without the space, even a continuous underline gives no clue.
