Re: Are images GFDL'd?

I raised this on meta a little while ago, at [[meta:permission grant extent]], but never 
got an answer (from, say, Jimbo) as to whether images are meant to be covered by 
the GFDL.

My feeling is that all images should be either GFDL, or fair use *where fair use will 
also apply to all our downstream redistributors*, and in that latter case the 
justification for fair use should be clearly marked on the image description page. My 
position is that adding an image where this is not the case potentially infringes the 
copyright of all prior contributors to a page, as well as severely impeding our overall 
goal of being an *open content* encyclopedia.

If you download an image from one Wikipedia, and upload it to another, be sure to 
additionally crosslink it to the original's image description page, and copy across the 
notice of copyright status (if there is any).
