--------------------------------------------------------------------- XFree86 4.4 Now Available in 10.3 Unstable --------------------------------------------------------------------- The latest XFree86 X11 server, XFree86 4.4, is now available in Fink unstable for Panther. For more information on XFree86 4.4, see the release notes at: http://www.xfree86.org/rel440.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- Licensing --------------------------------------------------------------------- Recently there has been a lot of discussion on the licensing changes the XFree86 team has made. After careful consideration and discussion with the XFree86 maintainer for Mac OS X, it was decided that the licensing issues do not affect Fink's packaging policy in any tangible way, and that Fink would release XFree86 4.4 packages. We would, certainly welcome it if the XFree86 team reverted their license. We are, however, merely acknowledging that not distributing the recent XFree86 release would do no good for our users. If you're interested in why and how the Fink team came to this decision, see the fink-core discussion threads here: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.core/172 http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.core/178 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Availability --------------------------------------------------------------------- XFree86 4.4 is available in the 10.3 unstable tree. XFree86 4.4 is not officially supported on 10.2-gcc3.3 to ease maintenance for 10.2 package maintainers. Users wanting XFree86 4.4 on Jaguar can still download the XFree86 binary packages from the XFree86.org web or FTP sites; system-xfree86 is fully capable of detecting and using an XFree86 4.4 that has been manually installed. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation --------------------------------------------------------------------- To install these packages you will need to update your package listings, by doing: fink selfupdate (You must have unstable enabled, and be configured to pull packages through CVS or RSync, not just updating at "point release".) For more information on enabling unstable, see: http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/users-guide/conf.php#optional Once you have a fresh package listing, you can update your xfree86 4.3.99 packages by running "fink update-all" if you have an existing XFree86 installation. Otherwise, see the information on installing or replacing X11 in the Fink X11 documentation, at: http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/inst-xfree86.php ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of GenToo technologies.
