fresh fink install on Catalina fails a2ps with daemonic

I did fresh install of fink on new upgrade to Catalina on a 2014 MacBook Pro

$ ./bootstrap
$ fink list
$ fink selfupdate
$ fink update-all
$ fink install res
$ fink install a2ps 
	with answers to include these:
	(6)	emacs26: Flexible real-time text editor
	(2)	psutils-letter: Postscript tools, letter size
	(1)	ghostscript: Interpreter for PostScript and PDF
	(1)	w3m: Text-mode WWW browser with tables/frames

and the build fails with this at the bottom:

I am currently building emacs26 separately, and it appears to be trying to use the "daemonic 20010902-14” already built

going back up in the log of the failed a2ps attempt I see that ti may have failed in an attempt to link to an existing file:

If the emacs26 installs, I’ll try the other dependencies separately and see that will allow a2ps to be installed.

Please advice and I am happy to collect any other information you may require.
(Note the the rcs install went well, so I suspect something in the fink with on Catalina latest and Xcode 11.3.1  and Command  Line Tools installed by the Helper Script.)
