    Did you previously have Xquartz installed on this machine (at most 
    likely the previous 2.7 release)? Or is the Xquartz-2.8.1 install also a 
    fresh install like the Fink install?

Hello Hanspeter,

   I think XQuartz was probably a fresh install, but I inherited the machine through my lab's IT department and I don't know its detailed history.  I am fairly sure there was no XQuartz present when I first got the machine.

Correction:  The IT department did a clean install of OSX 10.14 before I took over the machine, so I believe I can be sure there was no previous XQuartz install.  Apologies for the double post.
