Hi,
I’m essentially a beginner even though I’ve been using fink since the early
2000s, because I only use it to install/run xemacs. I bought 2 exactly
identical MacBook Air’s in early 2020 (one for work and one personal). I
installed fink (& xemacs) right away on my work laptop and it all went off
without much of a hitch. However, now I’m attempting to install on my
personal laptop, and I appear to be stuck… I was wondering if anyone can
advise me on how to proceed? Here’s what I’ve done so far.
Info:
- OS version: 10.15.7
- I already have the Command Line Tools installed and I installed the Java
8 JDK yesterday.
- no prior fink install
Steps taken:
1. Downloaded and ran the helper script from:
http://www.finkproject.org/download/srcdist.php
2. I had to modify the script:
/Users/robleach/Downloads/Web/InstallFink/Install Fink.tool
to:
comment out the Command Line Tools check
comment out the xquartz check
Because in both cases, the `pkgutil` wasn't returning anything even though
the things it was checking were installed. In fact, `xcode-select
—install` automatically quits because it says the CLT are already installed:
```
>pkgutil --pkg-info=com.apple.pkg.CLTools_Executables
No receipt for 'com.apple.pkg.CLTools_Executables' found at '/‘.
>xcode-select --install
xcode-select: error: command line tools are already installed, use
"Software Update" to install updates
```
3. I kept running into this error when running the helper script though
(having selected all defaults when configuring fink):
```
4. I saw that some things were installed, and decided to just try running
fink itself to finish the install...
```
> setenv PATH ${PATH}:/opt/sw/bin
> which fink
/opt/sw/bin/fink
> fink selfupdate
fink needs you to choose a SelfUpdateMethod.

Before reporting any errors, please run "fink selfupdate" and try again.
Also try using "fink configure" to set your maximum build jobs to 1 and
attempt to build the package again.
If you continue to have issues, please check to see if the FAQ on Fink's
website solves the problem. If not, ask on one (not both, please) of
these mailing lists:
The Fink Users List <[email protected]>
The Fink Beginners List <[email protected]>.
Please try to include the complete error message in your report. This
generally consists of a compiler line starting with e.g. "gcc" or "g++"
followed by the actual error output from the compiler.
Also include the following system information:
Package manager version: 0.45.3
Distribution version: selfupdate-git Tue Jun 15 07:35:35 2021, 10.15, x86_64
Trees: local/main stable/main
No recognized Xcode.app installed
No recognized Xcode CLI installed
Max. Fink build jobs: 4
```
Since the max build jobs was already non-zero, I didn’t try setting it to
1. Is the `1` suggestion assuming it was previously set to 0 or should I
change it from 4 to 1?
