However, something was evidently different in the re-instated Command Line Tools, as now compilation of python27 2.7.18-4 succeeds.

The OSX, fink, CommandLineTools and Xcode versions on my laptop are identical to those on the iMac, with the sole exception that on the laptop (where there is no build error for python27) the XCode build version is 11C504.

    Thanks for the follow up and apologies for missing your original
    message. It's not the first time we've seen that the Command Line Tools
    are misinstalled. It seems to be related to how the SDKs at
    /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs are installed. Sometimes, the
    relationship between the versioned SDKs and the unversioned SDK is
    incorrect, and that then brings in the wrong header. However, it's the
    cause of the misinstall is unknown. Out of curiosity, what's your
    current output of this command:

    ls -l /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs

    Hanspeter

Hello Hanspeter,

   Thanks for your message. Here's what I get:

$ ls -l /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs
total 0
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel   15 27 Aug 16:33 MacOSX.sdk -> MacOSX10.15.sdk
drwxr-xr-x  7 root  wheel  224 27 Aug 16:34 MacOSX.sdk 1
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel   10 27 Aug 16:28 MacOSX10.14.sdk -> MacOSX.sdk
drwxr-xr-x  8 root  wheel  256  7 Nov  2019 MacOSX10.15.sdk
$

   For what it's worth, I get identical output (except with different dates) with the same command on the laptop that didn't show the original error.

   One historical difference is that the iMac, which showed the error, had (long) previously been updated from 10.13, whereas the laptop was a clean install of 10.14 onto a blank, formatted disk. I don't know if that's relevant.

David Neuhaus.
