I think I’ve traced it to obsolete switches being passed to gcc: -read_only_stubs and -bind_only_stubs. I now have a new fink build running; it has =created a working dpkg. The changes were in finkinfo/base/dpkg*. I doubt I did the patch file correctly, hoping someone more knowledgable can make the proper fixes.

The -read_only_stubs issue had been 'fixed' a month ago, but it was
forgotten to be actually committed. I've pushed it now, so running `git
pull` will fetch code with the fix. If you locally fixed it your way,
there shouldn't be any need rerun ./inject.pl since the fixes would be
functionally similar.

There are 3 kinds of biologists: those who can count, and those who can't.
