The line that failed simply reads

/sw/bin/fink index


Just for clarification:  did you get the selfupdate failure and _then_
run "fink index -f", or did you get that failure _after_ running "fink
index -f"?

In the former case, you should be safe to try an update-all.  This
issue has been known to happen, but very rarely.
