I am looking into this and will update it one way or another. Note that I also just updated from pcre to libpcre1... from my point of view, it's hard to know when to upgrade a dependency on a lib to a newer "sibling" of that lib... First off, I might not even notice the newer version (as in this case); or I might not be sure whether I am supposed to upgrade (as was the case with pcre -> libpcre1, which I resolved by asking the maintainer.

I am sure other package maintainers have the same problem. Maybe we should advice maintainers of multiple package versions to add a recommendation to their DescDetail / DescPackaging field which advices maintainers of dependent packages on what to do...

Example: The information you just gave me could be included in the gnutls26 Description. Then when I do "fink info gnutls26", it could tell me something like this: "Note to package maintainers: Please upgrade your package dependencies from gnutls26 to gnutls-2.12 or (if possible) to gnutls28".

In addition or alternatively, perhaps major new alternative versions of a package should be announced and listed somewhere, e.g. on a wiki page dedicated to that...

Finally, I invite any package author to notify me if one of my packages depends on an outdated package of theirs. If so, I'll try my best to update my packages to correct that :).

Cheers,
Max
