It's obvious that moving dists past CVS would be a good move for Fink. However, has anyone ever done a good analyis on SVN versus Git? For source code, Git is seen as the "next-gen" version control system and SVN is usually not even thought about anymore. However, this case is significantly different that I think it would be wise to make a rational decision between the two. (Even if Github supports SVN, we need to make a valid decision about Fink's new default VCS selfupdate.)

My thoughts pro Subversion:
* The learning curve of SVN is much smaller
* Since commits are linear, merge problems are easier to understand and solve
* Partial checkouts are easier (if at all possible with Git)
* The guide for Fink maintainers that are used to CVS, but not to SVN, would be easier

My thoughts pro Git:
* With its great branching support, experimental wouldn't be necessary anymore
* Local history

I think SVN wins for this purpose, as Git's features do not compensate for SVN's (for lack of a better word) robustness in the hands of less experienced maintainers. Your thoughts?
