Yes, these are all true. As far as hosting, both github and sourceforge support svn over https, but only github does git over https. Sourceforge only supports git over the old git:// protocol, which is unfortunate. Other options are googlecode which supports both svn and git, and bitbucket which does git (and mercurial). Also note that while 10.5 does have svn, it's the severely outdated 1.4 version which could have issues with modern svn repos and be really slow. 10.5 users would really need to use fink's svn in this case. 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 all have svn 1.6.x which is fine.
