Can you try this change to 
/sw/lib/perl5/5.16.2/darwin-thread-multi-2level/Locale/gettext.pm (fix 
path to whatever system-perl is for you).  This file belongs to 
locale-gettext-pm5XXX.  Maintainer cc'd in case it works.
