Assuming you’re on 10.8 or later, reinstall Xquartz—Xquartz upstream recommends that you do that after every OS X update because Apple nukes the /usr/X11 and /usr/X11R6 convenience symlinks that upstream packages often rely on.

fink once again, as of version 0.38.5, also relies on those symlinks to be available to acknowledge your Xquartz installation.
