I use SourceTree.app as my git GUI. I haven't used the GitHub.app but 
I'm sure it probably has a very similar feature set.

For an updated GTK+2, I've CC'd Daniel Macks.
 From what I understand, glib2 newer than our v2.22.4 has broken 
behavior (that Macports seems OK with) on macOS and newer gtk+2 needs a 
newer glib2. So we're stuck at the older gtk+2 until the glib2 issue is 
sorted.
