Subject: [Fink-users] evince without texlive
Message-ID: <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>

Hi

I'd like to use use evince instead of xpdf, but when I try to install
it, fink wants to install the whole texlive pkg, but I already installed
texlive 2020 from CTAN.

Any idea how to proceed?

Alexander Hansen just responded to one of my messages:

We used to do a virtual package for TeTeX a long time ago, but we stopped because the lead developer disliked Fink, and also liked to move the files that we used as indicators that the package was installed—possibly deliberately. It got to be a hassle for the maintainer, so he dropped that. We gradually dropped allowing for externally-installed versions of other packages for the same reason — an upstream developer would move something, and Fink would think that the package wasn’t installed when it actually was.

The placeholder package isn’t hard in and of itself—it might just be a bunch of symbolic links from the Fink tree to the actual TeXlive binaries. What is hard is making sure that our other packages can swap between the two options.

So I’d just install Fink texlive package in parallel with your more recent texlive package. At least, that’s what I did for my purposes.
