Ah, I don’t use the builtin TeXLive on Debian (or more precisely, Ubuntu) precisely because the configuration of paper size in TeX is woven into other system paper sizes, and I found it quite inconvenient.  I’m not sure that following Debian’s example in this regard is helpful, but I obviously don’t know.

It seems that the “out of the box” default paper size for Fink’s proposed texlive is US letter, and that works for me, so I don’t have to call “texconfig paper letter” explicitly.

I understand that the rest of the world that uses A4 paper is out of luck, but I’m happy with the current defaults.
