    A clean checkout of fink/fink-distributions is 550MB in size. It's 
    carrying 20 years worth of Fink packages. We can probably trim off some 
    of the older descriptions for non-supported macOS releases, but no one 
    has come up with a workable plan that keeps enough history .

In the long-long-ago, we did "point" releases, as a tarball snapshot of all descriptions at a certain instant, rather than a version-control checkout. No idea if github supports that without someone manually applying a tag to the repo.
