I find it improbable that an OS update significant enough to get this level of version increment wouldn't include changes to Darwin. Is Apple just being sloppy and/or lazy with versioning? Or does keeping Darwin at the same version number serve some actual purpose? It's not the first time that Apple has bumped the macOS version number but didn't bump the Darwin number. See the table at the bottom of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_Big_Sur macOS 11.5 through 11.7 are all Darwin_20.6.0. It's not known why they didn't increase the Darwin version.
