I saw your other mail on the same topic in January and I was as eager as you to get a response but I am not surprised there were none. In 2019 I asked about the state of fink because I was very concerned about the slow demise of Fink.

From what I understand is that no-one in the ”core team” have access to modern mac with the latest macOS (at least that is what was stated some yers ago) and there are some technical difficulties in how Apple configures the system and the tools; i.e. how Fink can determine which version of XCode and the OS is in use.

There seems to be some working on Fink for later OS versions but I have not found any information on how to use it or even access it without being an insider. There have not been any progress information at all. Given that there are several versions that are not supported I think it would be fair for the core team to just give up on Big Sur and Montery and focus on Ventura.

My personal opinion is that Fink is very close to retirement. Someone needs to step in and put in a significant number of hours to get it to work. I might’ve joined and done some work, but the core scripts are written in Perl (which I think was a sensible choice at that time) but I’ve left it behind and don’t intend to go back. I don’t think this will happen anytime soon. I have moved to Brew.sh and only keep my Fink installation because Brew does not have one package I use a lot.

Then comes the question of how many of the packages actually are maintained? I don’t know since I haven’t been able to update my installation for years. Even if all the Fink scripts are updated, will there be something to install?
