My new machine is outside the officially supported range of MacOS versions, so it could be due to that; but I wanted to check here first to see if there are any known issues regarding libiconv?

The libiconv from gettext-0.20.2 that is still used in the released Fink turned out to be hard
or probably impossible to build with Xcode 16, so in the update for Sequoia I have updated
that to 0.22.5, which also build on recent Sonoma versions (just tested the bootstrap with
14.7 and clang-1600.0.26.3) – also added a patch required since the 14.7 update.
You can give that a try from https://github.com/fink/fink/pull/267
