If you have an older fortunes-mod installed, then you also have
recode-shlibs installed. After selfupdate, Now there is a new
fortune-mod available (that I know uses recode3-shlibs instead or
recode-shlibs) and a new recode-shlibs available (for various
reasons). When you 'update-all', fink does what you say, including
trying to update recode-shlibs. It doesn't know "first update
fortunes-mod, then don't bother with recode-shlibs or maybe even
uninstall it".

It would be interesting if update-all had an --exclude flag, but you'd
still need a way to figure out what to exclude. These are all to say
that update-all is pretty fragile. Instead, try doing the steps
manually...updating just fortune-mod, then nuking recode-shlibs. Then
maybe update-all would work on whatever else you have out-of-date? I
just grepped my whole current stable/main/finkinfo tree, and the only
mention of recode-shlibs is in php5 and recode-shlibs itself.

For the record, recode-shlibs has built repeatedly for me on 26.0. But
your error suggests there's a missing detail in a Makefile that might
be solved by putting MaxBuildJobs:false in the .info.
