For comparison, on my system (10.5, but let's go with it for now) I  
have:

$ dpkg -S libxml2.py
libxml2-py25: /sw/lib/python2.5/site-packages/drv_libxml2.pyc
libxml2-py25: /sw/lib/python2.5/site-packages/libxml2.pyc
libxml2-py25: /sw/lib/python2.5/site-packages/drv_libxml2.py
libxml2-py25: /sw/lib/python2.5/site-packages/libxml2.py

And /sw/bin/xml2po has

#!/sw/bin/python2.5
...

at its beginning.  I also don't set any python-related environment  
variables.
