Garbled xterm and gnome-terminal under gnome-session (2.24.2-1) under OSX 10.5.5

I've been using Fink for many years, having used it since
MacOSX 10.2.x. I have built it for numerous systems over that time.
The few problems that I had were mostly of my own doing.

In Nov and early Dec I had built Fink on an IMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2
Duo
under 10.5.5. It has had several Gnome packages (stable/unstable trees)
upgraded from 2.20, 2.22 to 2.24 over that time and it still works
just fine.

Last week I updated my dual Power PC G5 system with a new 1 TB drive and
decided to go to MacOSX 10.5.5 and build Fink from scratch using the
stable/unstable trees. All the compiles completed fine.

Just one problem. When I use gnome-session as the window manager, both
the xterm that starts up, and my gnome-terminal windows after entry to
the
gnome desktop, produce the wrong characters when I type. For example,
Return produces a j, delete produces a comma, 8 produces a return, etc.
Note: I am using the same keyboard as when I purchased the system.

This does not happen on the intel system.

I've done many things in trying to resolve this but finally have to
concede
defeat.

First I replaced Apple's X11 with Xquartz X11 2.3.1. When I start up
I get the console messages shown in the attached file
(console_log.txt). The

" _IceTransOpen: Unable to find transport for dnet "

messages do not appear on the intel system. Otherwise the messages
on the two systems are the same.
I downgraded to 2.2.3 on reading a note in the XQuartz web page
but it didn't change anything.
libdnet is not installed on either system, but I did install it on the
G5
system and it didn't help.

Second, if I remove my .xinitrc file the system starts up fine. The
xterm
gives the proper characters, but of course, I get no desktop.

The .xinitrc file is also attached (xinitrc.txt), but it really only
provides an environment
variable and invokes autocutsel and gnome-session.
The .xinitrc file worked fine on my 10.4.11 system with the same fink
gnome modules. It also still works on the intel machine.

Third, I have no .Xmodmap files in either the /sw structure nor in my
local directory [I noted that in 10.5 Apple no longer has a /etc/X11/
init
directory but uses /usr/X11/lib/X11/init and /usr/X11/share/X11 to
point to the xkb]. These same directory structures exist for the intel
machine
so I didn't figure this to be a problem.

Fourth, I noted that the real problem is when the exec gnome-session
is invoked. The xterm briefly disappears and reappears. After it
reappears
is when the typing problem begins. I force removed gnome-session,
fetched
and rebuilt gnome-session and its two companion programs. It didn't
help.

I don't know what gnome-session (2.24.2-1) is doing on startup but maybe
the maintainer can help me check to see how it configures things on
startup.
