Prior to following these instructions, this was the status on libsoup:
      libsoup-ssl     2.2.1-1004  SOAP implementation in C, with SSL

So, if rhythmbox depends on 2.2.8, it did not indicate so in the info  
file. 2.4.1 is what was installed as part of the compilation process.  
Installing 2.2.8 made the build successful.

But, perhaps, 2.4.1 is the version that ought to be installed because  
rhythmbox fails to load with this error.
