Now I see some evidence for this latter suspicion:

The last instruction executed before it goes astray comes from Fink's 
libfreetype, but the KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE address is from X11's 
libfreetype address range. No idea if this is conclusive; it could also 
be a wrong address resolution by the crash reporter.
