This means the sources of gtk+2-2.16.6-1 have been downloaded and fink 
has started to build the package. It then failed for some reason we

What do you mean by "listed in fink"? That version is indeed outdated, 
and I don't see it anywhere outside the binary distribution, which is 
outdated.

Which list? Your fink apparently thinks otherwise, because it already 
found that package, downloaded its sources and started to build it (see 
above). You cannot download a *binary* version of that package, but you 
can build it from source.

Tell us the error message you got from building gtk+2 and then, when the 
cause of the error is eliminated, continue building gcompris from source.
