  it and report results. There are several reasons it's not done (other
  than the obvious "untested" and inertia). One is that it may be a

  Associated with that, there are long-standing bugs in pango (or cairo
  upstreams aren't sure) related to subpixel rendering.

  The current configurations of the pango/cairo/xft/ft219 package suite
  works, and other times we've tried to enable or not-disable features,
  things broke (often subtly and difficult to trace). 
   
  It would be interesting to see how apple's x11's libfreetype is configured.
