When I said "remove them manually if necessary", I meant remove them if 
they don't automatically get removed when you run the setup program to 
uninstall TeX Live.

Here are a few other possibly relevant directories that may or may not 
exist, depending on your setup: ~/.local/share/texmf, ~/.cache/texmf, 
~/.config/texmf.  Here ~ is the home directory of the user running the 
setup program.
