I just released socat 1.8.1.0-2 as a TEST release, with support for SOCKS4, SOCKS4a, and SOCKS5. I don't have a SOCKS server to test those against, so please install the test release, and test it with your SOCKS server. For example, try socat TEXT:'GET / HTTP/1.1\n' SOCKS4:socksserver:cygwin.com:80 Then post your results to the Cygwin list.
