Apologies, but all these years on, all I needed to do was to read the
ConEmu documentation for my answer.

It appears the ChildGui feature kicks in:
https://conemu.github.io/en/ChildGui.html

And the supposition is that it works for the first "child" to embed
the GUI. In anticipation for a single window GUI application.

I was previously unaware of this feature. I hadn't even stumbled upon
it (or I guess I had, but in the most unintuitive way).

Just an aside, I am all onboard remaining within the Cygwin ecosystem
as much as possible. I just have a personal preference to use the
tabbed feature of ConEmu, and the "lannch" style scripting it
affords. Just applying horses-for-courses.
