Is that just a Qt thing, or Cygwin in general?  I've noticed this 
behaviour for quite some time (~/Downloads is on spinning disks in this 
example):

Username@computer:~/Downloads
$ time ls -l >/dev/null

real    0m30.818s
user    0m0.015s
sys     0m0.109s

Username@computer:~/Downloads
$ time ls -l >/dev/null

real    0m0.060s
user    0m0.000s
sys     0m0.046s

Username@computer:~/Downloads
$ ls -l | wc -l
1202
