For some time now (a year?), one of my jobs has had me working on a
program that, among other things, generates eBPF C-ish code.

I would say Vadim is being far too kind to eBPF.  "Horrible" is about
the nicest phrasing I have for my opinion of it; my unfiltered opinion
of it involves language not suitable for mailing lists such as these.
