I wasn't suggesting it isn't a reasonable question, more just asking
whether it needs to be table stakes.

The analogy of less(1) isn't quite apt btw, more/less gets everyday
use on almost any conceivable install, where as many systems never print
anything.  But that's beside the point.

Oh and I'm not advocating bringing cups into base either ;-)
Just saying it works and has for many years at least on my machines.
