Sorry for coming late to the party. I've been AFK since Friday (and will be 
pretty much AFK until Monday or Tuesday).

I have extracted lpr/lpd and friends into its own repo on GH and will 
create a port sometime next week or two.

Personally, I stopped using lpr/lpd when the filter I was using didn't 
natively support a new replacement printer we had purchased. Rather than 
muck around with filters and print fonts, which turned out to be a waste of 
time after a short while, I was forced to use cups instead. The printer 
supports an IPP interface. Cups is overly complex for the printing I do but 
it does work.

I haven't had a directly connected printer for a couple of years now.
