Seems like fwupd does something nasty which built-in tools like efivar don't, but on the other hand userland programs shouldn't crash kernel I'd say... For now, I'll need to check 15.1R-p1—there are unrelated changes, but I was cleaning old core dumps (thus, p0 gone).
