1) You have been using etcupdate wrong the entire time.

2) The only thing that has changed is that the default for the nobuild knob=
 has
been flipped from off to on.  You were aware of that, since you mentioned t=
hat
reverting that change fixed your problem.

3) As I have told you several times already, the correct solution is to run
etcupdate with the same environment that you use to run buildworld and
installworld.

4) Alternatively, you can continue to use etcupdate wrong by adding -b to y=
our
etcupdate command line.
