Bug ID: 297792
Summary: kern: panic in inotify_log(): vp->v_pollinfo == NULL
Product: Base System
Version: 15.1-RELEASE
Hardware: amd64
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Some People
Priority: ---
Component: kern
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE releng/15.0-n280995-7aedc8de6446 GENERIC amd64
(still reproducible on later 15 kernels I rebuild myself).
Panic / page fault in inotify_log() at:
mtx_lock(&vp->v_pollinfo->vpi_lock);
kgdb: vp->v_pollinfo == NULL.
Repro on this machine (KDE Plasma, non-root user):
- start a normal Plasma session
- click the digital clock widget, open the calendar, click around
- more likely with inotify-heavy apps running (Cursor / other Electron)
Without a local change the kernel panics within a few minutes of interactive
use.
I am not claiming a root cause. inotify_log() assumes v_pollinfo is non-NULL.
On this host the desktop session runs in a jail; I do not know whether that
matters.
Workaround only (not proposed as a correct fix). It stops the panic:
--- a/sys/kern/vfs_inotify.c
+++ b/sys/kern/vfs_inotify.c
@@ inotify_log
+ if (vp->v_pollinfo == NULL)
+ return;
mtx_lock(&vp->v_pollinfo->vpi_lock);
I mailed freebsd-bugs@ on 2026-01-10 (Message-ID
<[email protected]>) asking whether to file a
PR; no replies. I can attach a kgdb backtrace and more vnode fields if useful.
