Well, I made the jump to FreeBSD. It has been a few years since I made
a serious run at a FreeBSD install, and this weekend I got two systems
up. With Audio, even. The installer /stand/sysinstall has come a LONG
way, congratulations. 4.6 installed from the mini-iso is a treat.

I was surprised to see that XMMS was NOT in the audio packages section,
but alot of XMMS related tools were. So I tried to install the tools,
figuring XMMS would be picked up as a dependency. No luck, cryptic errors.

I ended up manually locating the package and running pkg_add. The
package name was

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/branches/4.0-stable/packages/audio/xmms-1.2.7_2.tgz

So I'm GUESSING that the underscore gives sysinstall heartburn? Pardon
me for not digging into the source 8-( but I figure comeone on the list
might care. Point me elsewhere of appropriate.

Another question for the maintainers of sysinstall: How about CACHING
the INDEX when retreived over the network? I had do download the same
index dozens of times, and I think a local copy is in order, even if it
only has a 15 minute lifetime, with a user option to refresh from the
net if needed.

I *know* that real FReeBSD users don't use sysinstall, but I like it and
I think it is a good vehicle to get newbies into a real OS.

I suppose I could also talk abotu ranking the packages, so that popular
packages are maked more prominently, but I suppose that would run afoul
of the democratic principles engendered by the FreeBSD project.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for the OS. Pointers, redirects, etc
welcomed.
