Have you considered building nanobsd https://docs.freebsd.org/en/articles/nanobsd/ 
(/usr/src/tools/tools/nanobsd) from either a pi4 or pi4 machine?

Seems designed for microSD devices and highly configurable.

I've not tried it yet though.
