releng/14 does not honor .forward for root

My RPi2 releng/14 armv7 test host sends and receives mail but for some
reason ignores a .forward in root's home directory. 

I was about to retest mail functioning before sending this, but
it seems the host locked up overnight 8-( with 13 lines of 
ucom_inwakeup: tp=0xd6b3d800
on the console. That's a frequently-seen message, no idea if it's
significant.
