Well that 1g box that I cited earlier today runs with nearly 700Mb free 
-- it does monitoring of a water system and is also a Stratum 1 GPS/PPS 
enabled time server.  So yeah it'd boot and run in much less but the $30 
price for those Pi3s is still rather attractive....
