Just to be clear, the machine has root on a usb-serial
adapter to a sata mechanical hard disk, with microSD
card only for booting. 

I'm familiar with the problems you describe regarding
write latency, but only in the context of a microSD
based system.

I'm actually not clear on what usbpf does and have
never before noticed it reporting errors on the console.
That's why I posted about it.
