OS Update & Ports problem

Two Questions:
[i] What is the best strategy for me to to update my O/S to the latest, 
I am currently running 4.xx, early xx's ?

[ii] In the ports collection, when I attempt to run "make" I get a core dump

       machI # make
       Bus error (core dumped)
       machI #
Suggestions welcomed
